Summer in the Mountains

Summer in the mountains is a vibrant tapestry of color and life, where nature awakens to its fullest glory. In the Canadian Rockies, emerald-green valleys stretch beneath towering peaks, while turquoise glacial lakes shimmer under the warm sun. Trails wind through wildflower-filled meadows, where the sweet scent of blooming lupines and paintbrushes fills the air, and wildlife thrives in the long, golden days. In Whistler’s Coastal Mountains, lush alpine forests give way to cascading waterfalls and serene mountain lakes, perfect for a refreshing dip or a moment of quiet reflection. The longer days invite endless adventure, from hiking to breathtaking viewpoints to cycling through verdant trails. Summer in these mountain ranges is a season of energy and beauty, offering unforgettable moments around every bend.

Jasper, Lake Louise, and Banff (Canadian Rockies):
  1. Elk: Often seen grazing in meadows or near the town sites, especially early in the morning and at dusk.
  2. Bighorn Sheep: These iconic animals can be found on rocky slopes or near highways, where they effortlessly scale cliffs.
  3. Mountain Goats: Look for these sure-footed creatures on steep rocky terrain, particularly around Lake Louise.
  4. Black Bears and Grizzly Bears: Active during the summer months, you might spot them foraging for berries and grasses in lower-elevation meadows and forests.
  5. Moose: Found in wetland areas and along riverbanks, moose are most active at dawn or dusk.
  6. Coyotes and Wolves: These predators can sometimes be seen hunting or traveling through the forested areas and open fields.
  7. Marmots and Ground Squirrels: Active during the day, these small creatures are often seen basking in the sun on rocky outcrops.
  8. Birds: A wide variety of birds return in summer, including Canada geese, ospreys, golden eagles, and numerous songbirds.
Whistler (Coastal Mountains):
  1. Black Bears: Commonly seen in Whistler during the summer, often foraging for berries, grasses, and other vegetation.
  2. Deer: Frequently spotted in forested areas and meadows, particularly near Whistler’s lower elevations.
  3. Coyotes and Foxes: Often seen in early morning or evening, these animals may be hunting for small mammals.
  4. Rabbits and Snowshoe Hares: Active throughout the summer, these animals are commonly seen in forested areas.
  5. Beavers: Found in rivers and streams, beavers are active year-round, and in summer, they can often be seen building or maintaining their lodges.
  6. Birds: Whistler sees a wide range of bird species, including hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and mountain bluebirds. Raptors, like eagles and hawks, soar high in the sky.
  7. Squirrels and Chipmunks: These small mammals are common around hiking trails, looking for food and darting among the trees.

Summer is the best time to see a wide array of animals, as they are out in search of food, often visible in the early mornings and late afternoons. Always keep a safe distance and follow park guidelines to ensure both your safety and that of the wildlife.
